What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion was primarily used as a facial treatment procedure to remove fine lines, wrinkles and acne. It is a non-invasive, non-chemical method that removes the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) that is made up of dry dead skin cells. At the same time, a suction is used to remove the dead skin and crystals. When the layer of dead skin is removed, new skin will start to grow and repair itself, leading to better improvement in hyper-pigmentation and texture over time.

Does Microdermabrasion Work On Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks are formed on the middle layer of the skin, the dermis. As such, microdermabrasion is unable to reach deep into the dermis to remove stretch marks. However, it can help to lighten them to make them less noticeable.

Studies have shown that microdermabrasio can help to bring down the level of the skin surrounding the stretch mark down to a closer level to the stretch mark itself, making the scars less visible. Besides the peeling effect, microdermabrasion for stretch marks also promotes collagen production in the skin, which increases its elasticity, thus reducing the appearance of stretch marks.

How Does Microdermabrasion Work To Reduce Stretch Marks?

Microdermabrasion works by spraying aluminum oxide crystals or diamond particles to sandblast the skin to exfoliate the outermost skin layer. The peeling of old skin on the epidermis and the rejuvenation of new skin cells over the treatment area will gradually help to contract the stretch marks, making them less noticeable.

Most people require 5 to 12 treatments, spaced 2-3 weeks apart to see results in diminished scars. Treatment typically last from 30 to 45 minutes per session.

Newer stretch marks seems to respond better to microdermabrasion treatment than the old scars, so make sure you start your treatment as soon as possible.

Additionally, professional microdermabrasion combined with with other forms of treatments such as the regular application of stretch mark creams can help to reduce the appearance of existing stretch marks faster as well as aid in the prevention of the formation of new stretch marks.

Other Alternatives To Microdermabrasion For Stretch Marks?

Besides microdermabrasion for stretch marks, other alternatives for the treatment of stretch marks include chemical peel and laser resurfacing.

Similar to microdermabrasion, a chemical peel is typically conducted for facial problems. During the procedure, one or more chemical solutions, such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid or carbolic acid, are applied to small areas on the skin. These applications produce a controlled wound that enables new and regenerated skin to appear. This skin regeneration is said to help fade stretch marks. However this method is not for everyone because the chemicals used may be too strong for people with sensitive skin. Side effects of chemical peel include redness, stinging, burning, peeling and scabbing.

Another alternative is laser resurfacing, which directs short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin. This method removes the outer skin (epidermis) very precisely, layer by layer. Two types of lasers most commonly used are carbon dioxide and erbium. Each laser vaporizes superficial, damaged skin cells and both reduce the risk for the patient because they limit the amount of heat absorbed by the skin.
